What is Apple time machine backup?

Apple time machine is a simple piece of backup and restores software which comes with every Apple Mac computers. The time machine backup can run in two different types of external drives.

01. Airport time capsule

The AirPort time capsule is a wonderful external hard drive featuring the NAS (network attached storage) and a gateway router made by the Apple. This product is pretty awesome for backing up the Mac computers. It allows connecting to the Mac PC’s by a USB port, Ethernet and wireless network. You can use the AirPort Time Capsule over a wireless connection and also with the automatic backing up. You can back up all kind of data such as photos, movies, podcasts, iBooks, PDF, software applications and etc. if you have more than one Mac computers, this is the best drive for backing up those all Mac computers, because the Airport time capsule can be used over a wireless connection.

02. Use an external hard drive.

You can use external hard drive for backing up the Mac PC through Apple Time machine. All you need to do is simply plug in your external hard drive to the Mac PC using Thunderbolt port, USB or FireWire.

How to Time machine backup external drive after plug in the external drive.

After plug in the external drive, you need to format that drive for use as the back p drive. For do that please follow the steps that mentioned below.

  1.  After plugging in the drive, go to the disk utility by using find bar on the top of the right-hand corner.
  2. Select the plugged external drive from the list of the drives that shows left-hand side. (please be very careful when selecting drives. Do not select internal hard drives)
  3. Then navigate to the right-hand side and click on the partition tab. Change 1 partition from the partition layout drop down menu
  4. Set up following settings now
  5. Change the format to the Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

    Rename the hard drive from the name section.

    Then go to the options and change the partition scheme to GUID Partition Table and then click ok.

    Click apply button to add all the setting changes to the drive.

Note: - it may take to appear newly formatted partition on the desktop. Sometimes a window will appear as soon as finishing the process that asking to Use as Backup Disk. You are welcome to click that button to proceed to the backing up process. But if you do not get that window, please follow the steps that mentioned below.

Got to the system preferences by clicking the Apple icon on the top left-hand corner and select the Time Machine icon. From the time machine window, you can select the disk.

When you select the drive, it will start to back up all the data automatically including images, files, audios, videos, applications and etc.

How to restore file with Apple time machine backup

You can restore your files and folder with the apple time machine. Even you can restore deleted files that you can’t find in the trash can. All you need to open the time machine backup from the menu bar and open the folders that you need to restore. To restore files in a folder, just follow the steps mentioned below.

  2. Then choose the icon of the time machine backup and click to open it.
  3. When you click the icon, you will be able to see a window and there is a check box name Show time machine in the menu bar. Keep selected the check box to show up the time machine in the menu bar.
  4. Go to the menu bar and click time machine icon and select the enter time machine from the drop down menu.
  5. You will get a number of folder windows after the last step. You can use those windows for checking the files that you need to restore. Also, you can use the time line on the right side for select previous days.
  6. When you find your file to restore, just select the file and click the restore button in the bottom right corner.
  7. After clicking the restore button, the time machine will copy the selected file to the original location.

When you are going to upgrade the Mac version or the Mac model, you need to install your previous data on the new Mac version or the new Mac hard drive. To do that task, you can use the time machine backup feature. Please follow guidelines.

  1. Switch to power on your Mac PC or laptop and hold down the Command key and R key simultaneously.
  2. After few minutes a window will open named macOS utilities on the screen.
  3. There may be more than one options on the window, you need to select the restore from the time machine backup and continue the process.
  4. After that, you can see some storage drives that you use as the backing up drives and select the correct drive to use as the backup source for restoring.
  5. Then you need to choose the destination hard drive to copy the backed up data.
  6. After you select the destination drive, the restoring process will begin and it will take some time and it depends on the backed up storage. After finishing the restoring process, the Mac PC or Laptop will restart.
